Syllabus
Our Organized Standard Syllabus
At the India Yoga United, we believe in the path of nonviolence (ahimsa अहिंसा). Yoga is not merely about physical postures; it encompasses a deeper understanding and achievement. To truly grasp the essence of yoga, one must immerse themselves in practice under the guidance of experienced yoga schools and teachers who can lead them on the path to discovering true yoga.
Nonviolence (ahimsa अहिंसा) is not tied to any religion. It is a process of self-control, self-awareness, and awareness of everything around us.
Our network of yoga schools and AYG L3 teachers are dedicated to providing exceptional yoga teacher training programs. They strive to teach students with dedication and hard work, transforming them into professional teachers.
Our Syllabus Structure

Rooted in ancient yogic traditions yet tailored for modern practitioners, this comprehensive curriculum delves into the essence of yoga philosophy, anatomy, and teaching methodology. Students cultivate a deep understanding of asanas, pranayama, and meditation techniques through a harmonious blend of theory and practice, embarking on a transformative journey of personal growth. Led by seasoned instructors, this immersive experience empowers individuals to share the transformative power of yoga with confidence. With an emphasis on alignment, sequencing, and mindful teaching, graduates are poised to guide students on their transformative paths toward holistic well-being.
Syllabus Flexibility and Approval Process
Please note that the Indian Yoga United provides a brief overview of the syllabus. The detailed syllabus will be created by individual schools or AYG L3 teachers. We do not mandate that schools or teachers strictly adhere to our syllabus or any particular style. You have the freedom to create your own syllabus. However, before starting your yoga teacher training program, you must inform the Indian Yoga United via email and send a copy of your syllabus for review. Once your syllabus is approved, you can commence your teacher training.
This protocol applies to all levels of training. We advise our AYG L3 teachers to specialize in one form of yoga to demonstrate professionalism in teacher training. If you are offering all three levels of training, each syllabus must be reviewed and approved by the Indian Yoga United.
Maintaining Excellence
Should you make any changes to your syllabus after initial approval, please inform us and send the revised syllabus for re-approval? This ensures that all training programs maintain the high standards set by the Indian Yoga United.
By following these guidelines, we ensure that our yoga teacher training programs are consistent, high-quality, and transformative for all students.

Challenges of Daily Practice
Many students face challenges such as frustration, ego battles, and physical discomfort. Overcoming these barriers requires patience and dedication. Tips for maintaining a daily practice include:
- Choose a Time:
Incorporate a quick yoga session into your daily routine by identifying the ideal time for self-care. Set a reminder on your phone to ensure consistency
- Begin Modestly:
Start with a brief practice to increase your likelihood of sticking with it. This could involve five minutes of sun salutations, a few fundamental poses, some pranayama (breathing exercises), and a short meditation. Gradually extend your practice as you become more comfortable.
- Select the Proper Level:
Choose yoga classes that match your skill level and time commitment to avoid discouragement. If needed, seek additional guidance beyond class teachings. Many instructors offer personalized sessions to ensure you receive the correct information.
- Find a Motivating Instructor:
Find a teacher whose style resonates with you and whose classes challenge you appropriately. Ask friends or family for recommendations, or explore the many excellent online yoga sessions available.
- Do What Feels Right:
Focus on how the practice feels rather than how it looks. Follow your body’s cues, whether that means performing a few sun salutations in the morning or simply sitting quietly and breathing deeply. Practice in a way that makes sense to you.
- Be Patient:
Consistency can be challenging as you learn more than expected. Patience is key. Regularly remind yourself why you committed to a daily yoga practice. Like any skill, the benefits of yoga and meditation deepen with consistent practice.
By following this syllabus, students will gain a deep understanding of yoga’s history, philosophy, anatomy, and physiology, along with practical guidance for starting and maintaining a daily practice.

Standardized Postures

Alignment and Injury Awareness
Focus on proper alignment and injury prevention techniques.
In yoga, the term “alignment” refers to the proper technique for performing a posture to maximize its health benefits and minimize the risk of injury. Alignment is a flexible concept that accommodates practitioners of all levels, sizes, and shapes. It encourages the use of props, adjustments, and common sense to find the safest and most effective way for each body to fully experience each posture. With a solid understanding of alignment, you can adapt almost any yoga position to suit your needs.
Why is Alignment So Important in Yoga?
Alignment aims to reduce the risk of injury, allow your body to open up in new ways, and establish a solid foundation for safe practice. Performing a posture out of alignment may not cause immediate, severe pain, but many yoga injuries are cumulative and develop over time due to wear and tear on joints and supporting tissues.
Using props such as a supportive mat with good grip, yoga blocks, and straps is not a sign of inadequacy. These tools help yoga students practice with proper alignment from their very first session, preventing the sacrifice of form. For example, if you cannot touch the ground with your hands in a standing forward fold while maintaining a straight spine, using blocks under your hands allows you to achieve the posture safely and effectively.
The Alignment Journey
Initially, alignment may not be intuitive. Developing a sense of where your body is in space during practice requires experience. Your teacher will provide verbal cues and visual examples as the first alignment instructions. You might not immediately understand how to apply these cues to your body. The instructor may then use hands-on adjustments to guide you into the correct alignment.
Awareness of Injuries from Improper Yoga Practice
Yoga offers numerous mind-body benefits, including stress relief, injury prevention, increased flexibility, strength, balance, and mental calmness. However, despite its reputation as a peaceful, low-impact practice, yoga carries risks like any form of exercise.
Injuries can occur if you are not careful, especially to the neck, wrists, lower back, shoulders, elbows, knees, and hamstrings. These injuries often result from improper technique, over-straining, or incorrect alignment. For example, people with arthritis should be particularly cautious, as their joints may become painful after practice. They might consider gentler forms of yoga and avoid overworking their joints. Similarly, individuals with osteoporosis should avoid forward bends and twists.
Investing in a few private yoga sessions with an instructor can help determine what your body needs and which type of class is best for you. Remember, not all yoga is created equal.
Adjustments in Yoga
Several factors make adjustments during yoga practice crucial. The most important ones include:
- Building a solid foundation for safe practice
- Allowing the body to expand in new directions
- Significantly reducing the risk of injury
For those aspiring to become yoga practitioners or teachers, or for those attending their first yoga session, it is important to be aware of several unwritten norms:
onsent is Crucial
Not everyone is comfortable with direct physical touch. It is essential for practitioners to give informed consent for instructors to guide them during class.
Permit Students to Opt Out
The comfort level required to transition into a pose varies. If a student appears uncomfortable, give them the option to opt out. Similarly, do not hesitate to inform your teacher if you feel unprepared for a particular adjustment.
Avoid Surprising Students
When about to assist a student with an adjustment, let them know you are there. Avoid sudden, unexpected touches.
Promote Self-Awareness
Teach your students that it is more important to listen to their bodies than to achieve a specific goal. Encourage them to focus on protecting themselves from harm and following their instincts rather than trying to impress others.
Before giving hands-on adjustments in yoga, consider the following points:
- Prepare in advance and understand what you intend to do.
- Prioritize student safety by making adjustments carefully or refraining altogether.
- Always inform the student before touching them.
- Often, a subtle adjustment is all that’s needed.
- Be mindful of any resistance from the student.
- Request feedback to ensure comfort and effectiveness.
